SAFE WINTER DRIVING IN SASKATCHEWAN

Driving conditions in Saskatchewan aren’t always ideal. Inclement weather can affect roads and as a motorist, you need to adjust your driving habits accordingly. On average in Saskatchewan, road and weather conditions are a contributing factor in more than 8,500 vehicle collisions each year. These crashes result in an average of 1,530 injuries and 21 deaths annually.

It’s important to recognize that poor visibility – whether caused by rain, snow, fog or bright sunlight – gives you less time to react to hazards.  Slowing down and constantly scanning the road in front of you is the best way to stay safe.

TIPS AND TRAVEL GUIDELINES

  • Posted speed limits are for ideal driving conditions. When those conditions deteriorate you must slow down in order to maintain control of your vehicle. So even if the posted limit is 100 km/h, in poor conditions you should be driving under that speed.
  • If possible, prepare your car before your trip by checking the battery, windshield wipers, and fluid levels.
  • Be sure your headlights and taillights are functioning properly so that you can see (and be seen) in low visibility.
  • Remember to use caution near intersections when the roads are slippery. Another driver may be approaching too fast and be unable to stop, so you should always look both ways before proceeding, even if you have the right of way.
  • Leave more distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you when driving conditions are poor. Slippery surfaces increase your stopping distance, so following another vehicle too closely could result in a rear-end collision. This is especially true in the winter when snow and ice present a unique challenge to drivers.
  • Stay safe in the cold by checking the road and weather conditions before your trip and ensuring that your vehicle has a full tank of gas.
  • Clear snow from your vehicle and be sure your windows are completely free of frost before hitting the road.
  • When you’re driving in the winter, keep both hands on the steering wheel and try to stay in 1 lane as much as possible.
  • If you begin to skid or lose control of your vehicle, remain calm and take your foot off the accelerator. Don’t lock the brakes. Instead, brake steadily, look where you want to go and steer in that direction.
  • A roadside emergency kit is another essential part of safe winter driving.

  • roadside emergency kitBuy or put together and maintain an emergency kit that has:

    • a shovel
    • Blankets
    • Snow brush
    • Ice scraper
    • Flashlight
    • Batteries
    • Flares
    • Booster cables
    • Candles
    • First-aid kit

No matter what causes poor driving conditions – from a winter blizzard or a summer rainstorm – remember that your 1st choice should be avoiding travel altogether. Wait until the conditions improve to ensure that you arrive at your destination safely.

Benefits Of Landscaping - By Rapid Lawn Landscape Solutions

Rapid Lawn Landscape Solutions Ltd. is a TRUSTED REGINA landscaping company who have helped many customers achieve the yards they have always dreamed of. In their latest article, they share some benefits of landscaping.

It’s easy to appreciate the sights and smells afforded by lush green lawns and landscapes, but did you know their real value is much more substantial than pleasing aesthetics and aromas? That’s right, well-managed landscapes offer tremendous benefits for people and for the environment.

Environmental Benefits of Landscaping

Benefits Of Landscaping

  • Natural Coolants – Grass is much cooler than asphalt or cement. It acts as an “air conditioner” for the surrounding area. In fact, lawns can be 31 degrees cooler than asphalt and 20 degrees cooler than bare soil. Trees shading homes can reduce attic temperatures by as much as 40 degrees.
  • Environmental Cleaners – Grass plays a vital role in capturing dust, smoke particles and other pollutants, and it produces oxygen.
  • Water Protectors – Healthy lawns absorb unhealthy runoff that might otherwise filter into bodies of water.
  • Air Cleaners – Grasses absorb carbon dioxide and break it down into oxygen and carbon. A turf area 50′ x 50′ produces enough oxygen to meet the everyday needs of a family of four.
  • Noise Minimizers – Lawns and plants dramatically reduce noise pollution; they can reduce noise levels by 20 percent to 30 percent over hard surfaces like concrete and pavement.
  • Turfgrass slows down and absorbs runoff into bodies of water.

Even in areas that have water restrictions and are experiencing drought, it is important that lawns and landscapes remain a viable component of healthy communities. There are a number of sustainable practices that will allow managed lawns and landscapes to reduce water usage but still provide important environmental benefits.

Benefits of Commercial Landscaping

Businesses are more successful when they provide clients with landscaped areas around buildings and plants inside Best regina landscaperbuildings.

  • Research found seven percent higher rental rates for commercial offices having high-quality landscapes.
  • Shoppers claim they will spend nine to 12 percent more for goods and services in central business areas that have high quality tree canopies.
  • Shoppers indicate they will travel a greater distance and a longer time to visit an area with a high-quality tree canopy, and spend more time there once they arrive.*
  • Companies that provide their employees with interactions with nature also benefit. Research showed that workers who could view nature from their desks had much better job and life satisfaction and better health.

Physical and Psychological Benefits Of Landscaping

  • The benefits of human interaction with plants, trees, and grass are also well studied and documented. Research has found that people find stress relief and healing when interacting with nature or even viewing it through a window.
  • According to Harvard Health Publications, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) seem to focus better after being outdoors. Workers are more productive as well when working in environments with plants, and cognitive function is improved.

But, perhaps more important than what science tells us, is what people instinctively feel about the plants and green spaces in their lives–that the connection makes their lives better, and they want to make an effort to incorporate it into their lives.

In addition to landscape designhardscaping and artificial turf, we also do conventional seeding and are suppliers of landscape supply products. We sell all types of turfgrass seed, native grass seed and low maintenance grass seed products.

Our professional Trusted Regina hydroseeding and landscaping team offers innovative re-vegetation, grass seeding, dust control, reclamation, landscaping and erosion control solutions and hydroseeding for all types of residential, commercial, government, industrial and oilfield projects.

Protecting Your Boat From Winter Elements

Almost everyone agrees that protecting a boat from winter weather is a good idea but what is the best way to protect your investment over the winter months? Performance Marine suggests Shrink Wrapping your boat.

What is Shrink Wrap?

Before you can answer the question “Should I Shrinkwrap My Boat?”, it would be helpful to understand what shrink wrap is and how it works.  Shrink Wrap is a layer of polyethylene that is cut to fit over the top and around your boat.  This layer comes with UV inhibitors built in to protect your boat from the sun’s rays if stored outside.  Shrink wrap is made to shrink when heat is applied to it.
One of the key elements of successfully winterizing your boat is covering it properly. This will protect your investment from rain, snow and varmints looking for shelter from wind and cold.

Should I Shrink Wrap My Boat?

For all of the benefits of living in this neck of Canada, we must admit that the harsh weather of the late autumn, winter, and even early spring can be a real pain when it comes to keeping your toys in top condition.  As the boating season winds down and winterization becomes a thought on all boater’s minds, one thing to consider is how you are going to store your boat for the winterShrink Wrapping is a process that seals your boat up and protects it from the elements when you don’t intend to use it for a while.  It can also be a good option when preparing the boat for transportation.  Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of shrink wrapping so you can decide “Should I shrink wrap my boat?”

  • 100% weather proof (no seams or gaps)
  • Perfect molded fit for you application. Can be cut and customized
  • Is air tight when containment is required or can be vented when humidity or moisture is a problem
  • Won't chaffe, won't flap in the wind, won't damage your investment.
Shrink wrap is strong and seals tight so the elements do not have any effect on it when installed correctly.  This way you don’t have to worry about bailing water from the cover or removing snow or ice.
The other advantage to shrink wrapping besides protecting your boat’s interior is keeping the sun off your boat’s exterior.  When a boat sits outside for long periods of time, the exterior can become dried out and start to fade.  This might result in you having to get the boat professional detailed or buffed to restore the exterior.  This process can be more expensive than just shrink wrapping the boat in the first place.

What About My Boat Cover?

If you store your boat outside using the snap covers or mooring cover, this could cause several issues as well.  Snap covers do not cover the outside of the boat, so it will be exposed to the sun’s rays all winter.  Some of these covers also do not keep the boat very clean or seal the boat up completely.

One disadvantage to regular boat covers is that they can fill with water or ice and leak or pool into the boat.  A cover can also be effected by the wind and other elements.  This water can leak into the boat.  A worst case scenario would be for the cover to tear.  Then you would have to replace a very expensive cover as well.

Performance Marine has Storage, Shrink Wrapping and Winterizing options.

When done properly, you will open the boat to find it exactly as it was when you had it wrapped.   Protecting your investment with shrink wrapping might be one of the most important maintenance services to have done for your boat this winter.
