Protecting Your Boat From Winter Elements

Almost everyone agrees that protecting a boat from winter weather is a good idea but what is the best way to protect your investment over the winter months? Performance Marine suggests Shrink Wrapping your boat.

What is Shrink Wrap?

Before you can answer the question “Should I Shrinkwrap My Boat?”, it would be helpful to understand what shrink wrap is and how it works.  Shrink Wrap is a layer of polyethylene that is cut to fit over the top and around your boat.  This layer comes with UV inhibitors built in to protect your boat from the sun’s rays if stored outside.  Shrink wrap is made to shrink when heat is applied to it.
One of the key elements of successfully winterizing your boat is covering it properly. This will protect your investment from rain, snow and varmints looking for shelter from wind and cold.

Should I Shrink Wrap My Boat?

For all of the benefits of living in this neck of Canada, we must admit that the harsh weather of the late autumn, winter, and even early spring can be a real pain when it comes to keeping your toys in top condition.  As the boating season winds down and winterization becomes a thought on all boater’s minds, one thing to consider is how you are going to store your boat for the winterShrink Wrapping is a process that seals your boat up and protects it from the elements when you don’t intend to use it for a while.  It can also be a good option when preparing the boat for transportation.  Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of shrink wrapping so you can decide “Should I shrink wrap my boat?”

  • 100% weather proof (no seams or gaps)
  • Perfect molded fit for you application. Can be cut and customized
  • Is air tight when containment is required or can be vented when humidity or moisture is a problem
  • Won't chaffe, won't flap in the wind, won't damage your investment.
Shrink wrap is strong and seals tight so the elements do not have any effect on it when installed correctly.  This way you don’t have to worry about bailing water from the cover or removing snow or ice.
The other advantage to shrink wrapping besides protecting your boat’s interior is keeping the sun off your boat’s exterior.  When a boat sits outside for long periods of time, the exterior can become dried out and start to fade.  This might result in you having to get the boat professional detailed or buffed to restore the exterior.  This process can be more expensive than just shrink wrapping the boat in the first place.

What About My Boat Cover?

If you store your boat outside using the snap covers or mooring cover, this could cause several issues as well.  Snap covers do not cover the outside of the boat, so it will be exposed to the sun’s rays all winter.  Some of these covers also do not keep the boat very clean or seal the boat up completely.

One disadvantage to regular boat covers is that they can fill with water or ice and leak or pool into the boat.  A cover can also be effected by the wind and other elements.  This water can leak into the boat.  A worst case scenario would be for the cover to tear.  Then you would have to replace a very expensive cover as well.

Performance Marine has Storage, Shrink Wrapping and Winterizing options.

When done properly, you will open the boat to find it exactly as it was when you had it wrapped.   Protecting your investment with shrink wrapping might be one of the most important maintenance services to have done for your boat this winter.

Trusted Regina Financial Advisor Shares a Tip on Estate Planning Strategies

John Barabe with Assante Financial Management Ltd. has an unwavering commitment to quality and service which has enabled him to build and retain a successful practice in Regina. He and his team believe that planning with honesty and integrity are cornerstones to improving clients' quality of life. He applies his knowledge to help clients make the right choices when considering all the product and service options that exist in today's marketplace.

Here he shares a tip on Estate Planning Strategies.

Estate Planning Strategies

Many families are not aware of the estate planning options necessary to ensure their intentions are carried out on death.  Estate planning is complicated enough without adding family dynamics into the mix making preparation important.

With the current trend of living together without getting married many couples think that the same marital status that applies to taxation also applies to estate.  It does not.

Upon death, without a valid will, a common law partner is not recognized as a spouse and would be excluded from a share in the estate.

Consideration and selection of an appropriate nominee guardian for minor children is an integral part of the estate planning process.  Why risk courts and government agencies intervening to make decisions.  You need certainty that the care of your child’s life is in the right hands.  Emotional toll is only compounded with the potential of inheritances that may be tied up and or depleted in the process.

Although a will only makes up a portion of an estate plan, there are many unintended mistakes that are commonly made.  For example, many people enter into identical wills with their spouse or partner.

What few are aware of is by law the survivor may not change or revoke his or her will after the death of their partner.  Changes could be contested causing family problems and unintended beneficiaries.

What if the surviving spouse develops additional needs?  What if one of the children divorce and both are beneficiaries?  What if a surviving spouse wishes to make special arrangements for a caregiver or charity that helped either party in a time of need?  The variations are endless.  This common problem is solved by adding a simple provision to your wills.

Sometimes seemingly small word changes can have unintended but substantial legal ramifications that result in dramatic changes to the distribution of assets from what was planned.  Small changes can undo best intentions and unfortunately family conflict can result.

The process John follows for estate planning includes:

  1. Complete an estate planning checklist.
  2. Meet with you and your spouse or partner and clarify and confirm desires and objectives
  3. Ensure the people involved with your estate are aware of the intentions.  This can include beneficiaries, executors (or executrixes), trustees and guardians.
  4. Then implement.  All the other steps are not valuable without action.

Make sure your beneficiaries are taken care of, according to your wishes.

John Barabe with Assante Financial Management Ltd. and his team carefully consider your needs, goals and dreams in order to implement a well-constructed financial strategy, so that you can have peace of mind about your hard-earned money and financial future.
