Getting into a hot tub after a tiring day at work can certainly relax your entire body. However, even the most exquisite spas need a good cleaning every now and then. One of the best ways to ensure that your hot tub stays clean is to create a routine schedule, and stick to it. With regular cleaning of the tub, you’ll realize it isn’t troublesome at all to keep a very clean area for you and your family to enjoy.


Hot tubs run at an optimal temperature for mold and bacteria to flourish. They can grow on the sides of your tub and within the system itself. Therefore, it’s imperative that you flush the lines of your hot tub regularly. This basically means running a cleaner through the system regularly to keep it cleaner than ever before! 

Common side effects of not cleaning your spa can include cloudy water, decreased water pressure or strain on the motor. These should wither off once you develop the habit of cleaning the lines regularly. The procedure may differ according to your cleaner choice and hot tub model. Always refer to the specific instructions provided with the products and/or spa.


Next, you should disconnect the power. Leaving the power source connected while draining and cleaning your spa can be detrimental to the entire system. It could result in several issues, including:

  • Broken pumps
  • Damaged circuit breaker
  • Reduced longevity or performance

Refer to instructions included with your spa to safely disconnect the power source. This simple step could save you tons of unnecessary costs down the road.


This should be done according to the instructions that come with your hot tub. You can use a built-in sump pump or a drain plug for this purpose, however many manufacturers do recommend leaving the foot-well of your hot tub full of water. In case that flushing the lines leaves a cloudy discharge, it’s important that you empty your tub completely to remove any bad particles or debris.


After the initial rinsing of the tub, it’s time to clean! Sanitize your system using various hot tub cleaners, rags or spa scrub brushes. Gently scrub off all the dirt and grime with your rag or even a sponge.  Be sure to use soft sponges to avoid causing any damage to the surface or the shell of cabinetry.

After the scrubbing, comes the more technical part of cleaning. Take out the filters from the cabinet in which your pump is located. You might have to unscrew a few bolts, so you should keep the necessary equipment by your side. After removing the filters, gently spray them with a garden hose. Afterwards, scrub them with a dichloride solution and then place it in an oil cutting solution for at least half an hour for maximum results.

Every educator has struggled with the challenge of keeping their students engaged and interested in their learning material. One way to overcome this hurdle is to embrace inquiry-based learning — a teaching method that places students’ questions, ideas and observations at the centre of the education experience.

At one point or another, every educator has struggled with the challenge of keeping the attention span of a classroom full of students. When students do not find subjects or problems particularly interesting or intellectually stimulating, they often have difficulty staying focused and have issues with retaining important information.

One way to overcome this hurdle — and to foster a greater interest in the material being taught — is to encourage students to become active contributors to their own learning experience through a method of teaching known as inquiry-based learning.


In the Ontario Ministry of Education’s report Inquiry-based Learning: On Transforming Wonder into Knowledge, inquiry-based learning is described as a teaching approach that builds on the idea that educators and students both share responsibility for learning.

Instead of an educator telling students everything they need to know, inquiry-based learning places students’ questions, ideas and observations at the centre of the learning experience, and requires them to engage in evidence-based reasoning and creative problem solving. The approach emphasizes learning by doing, encouraging students to build their knowledge through experience and exploration.

“The key to [inquiry-based learning] is to teach students how to ask their own questions, and to discern good questions from bad questions,” explained Dr. Alan Edmunds, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Western University.

Dr. Edmunds added that the approach is about helping students generate solid, inquisitive and deep questions around a topic.

Inquiry-based learning also combines several approaches to instruction that have been proven to be successful, including small-group and guided learning.

According to Dr. Sharon Friesen, Professor and Vice Dean of the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary, inquiry-based learning has been used in the classroom environment at universities since their inception. She explained that this form of teaching has also been used in primary and secondary education for decades.


While inquiry-based learning is a dynamic approach that can be adapted for almost any learning environment, there are several components that need to be put in place in order to make the teaching style successful for everyone involved. A few of these key components are:

A culture of inquiry: According to Inquiry-based Learning: On Transforming Wonder into Knowledge, establishing a culture in which students are encouraged to express their thoughts and challenge one another’s ideas is an important first step in the inquiry process. When students feel comfortable and encouraged to share what they are thinking, they are much more likely to contribute to a classroom discussion amongst their peers.

External support (for teachers): Dr. Friesen explained that unless a curriculum has been designed to require deep understanding of a few significant ideas central to the subject disciplines under study, teachers would need to spend a significant amount of time interpreting and re-configuring the guidelines to make them coherent and applicable to the inquiry-based learning approach.

Educator guidance and support (for students): Even though a large component of inquiry-based learning revolves around students, the success of the approach depends on the guidance provided by teachers. According to the Canadian Education Association’s research resource Is Inquiry-Based Learning Effective?, “teachers should guide students to develop a good question for investigation, monitor their inquiry process, and provide guidance when they encounter difficulties.” Dr. Edmunds agreed with this, explaining that while students learn great from other students, the teacher needs to guide them so they discover the proper knowledge.

Understanding of the audience: Dr. Edmunds suggested that educators do a small test of their students’ understanding by going through the nuts and bolts of the material prior to asking them higher order questions. He explained progressive assessments should be used to ensure that all students have a solid knowledge base before beginning.

Open-mindedness and spontaneity: When planning for a lesson, teachers may feel the need to begin or frame the discussion around one question or a specific set of questions. However, inquiry-based learning is most effective when the leader has an open-minded approach and is willing to build on spontaneous questions that encourage further thought and discussion amongst the class.


Inquiry-based learning is a useful method that educators should embrace, as it helps to enhance the learning experience of students. The method gives children the opportunity to take a hands-on approach in their education while obtaining several important skills that can be used at all levels of their learning, and even into their future careers.

Within discipline-based inquiry learning, students learn how to: gather, critique, analyze and interpret information; create working theories; pose new questions; bring forward evidence; integrate new ideas,” Dr. Friesen said.

“Students are taught specific skills and knowledge that are at the heart of the disciplines in a discipline-based inquiry-learning classroom as they are key to them fully advancing within the subjects,” She added.

Inquiry-based learning also gives students the opportunity to develop stronger relationships with their classmates, improve their communication skills, and increase the confidence they have in their own ideas and ability to contribute in the classroom.


While inquiry-based learning is an effective method that can be embraced in a variety of situations, it isn’t a method that should be used for everything.

There are multiple learning situations and lessons that would benefit from a more direct approach, such as explaining how to complete a straightforward multiplication or division equation. Asking higher order questions in a situation like this would likely confuse students, especially if they do not already have the proper knowledge base to take part in the discussion.

However, if an opportunity arises to engage students by asking questions and encouraging them to play a bigger role in their knowledge development, embracing inquiry-based learning will help engage young learners and foster excitement in the subjects they are learning about.

Understanding Credit

How you manage your credit plays a big part in how a lender looks at your mortgage application. By understanding the makeup of a credit score and working towards establishing a solid credit profile, you can increase your chances of getting approved for a mortgage. This article is part three in a short series that aims to help you understand mortgage qualification. 

There are four key areas that come under scrutiny when a lender looks at a mortgage application; income, credit, downpayment, and the property. You can find the previous articles in the series here:

The following is an in-depth look at how your credit is viewed by a lender when assessing your mortgage application. 

Credit Agencies

In Canada there are two credit reporting agencies, Equifax and Transunion. Typically Transunion is used by consumers as a monitoring service to protect against identity theft, while Equifax is relied on about 90% of the time by lenders looking to determine if you are credit worthy. Every time you borrow money, a history of that loan is sent by the lending institution to both Equifax and Transunion, this makes up what is called your credit report. The information on your credit report is then boiled down into a single three digit number called your credit score (sometimes called a beacon score).

It’s not uncommon for your credit score to be different between Equifax and Transunion as not all lenders report all information to both agencies at the same time. Although your Equifax credit report will be used for mortgage qualification, lenders may also want to have a look at a your Transunion report as well, especially if your Equifax report has some issues with collections or late payments.  

Understanding Credit – Credit Score

Credit Score

Your credit score is a three digit number between 300 and 900. The higher the score the better. Depending on where you look online, you will find several variations of the ranges that indicate credit worthiness. Although somewhat general, the following is pretty accurate when talking about mortgage financing:

  • If you find yourself between 300-600, you have bad credit and won’t have access to the best products and rates available. 
  • If your credit score is between 600-680, there is a good chance you have had some issues in the past, you can qualify for mortgage insurance, but it’s gonna be touch and go.
  • If your credit score is between 680-720, you have good credit, not incredible, but a check in the right box for sure. 
  • If your credit score is over 720, you have excellent credit and lenders will view you as a “good risk”. 

Now, a credit score is both a snapshot in time and a moving target. Your credit score will change as new information is reported to the credit agencies as these new variables impact your score. When applying for a mortgage, we will “pull a credit report” which gives us a picture of where your credit score is at currently. This snapshot is what the lender uses to assess your credit when determining if they want to lend you money or not.

It’s good to note that although your credit score is a single indicator of credit, it certainly does not make up the entire picture. Lenders will also look at the particulars of your credit report and they will most certainly ask for more information if something seems out of place.

Understanding Credit – Calculating a Credit Score

Both Equifax and Transunion consider the following factors when building your credit score: payment history, amount of money owed, length of credit history, new credit, types of credit. Although there is an exact science to their algorithms, that information is not public knowledge. They have however given us the following categories with a corresponding percentages of how much weight is being put on each. 

Credit Score Calculation

Payment History – 35%

When building your credit score, the most weight is given to how you have dealt with paying your previous debts. And this makes the most sense. If a lender is going to give you money to purchase a property, they might want to see how you repaid your car loan, or your student loans, or your $1,000 Mastercard. If you can’t pay your Rogers cell phone bill on time, what assurance are you giving them that you will pay your mortgage on time? 

Your payment history looks at all your consumer debts or trade lines. A trade line represents a single debt owed to an institution. Trade lines come in many forms, credit card, line of credit, car loan, student loan, and so on. Any time you borrow money, the history of that trade line shows up on your credit report with the payment history from the last 6-7 years being visible. Obviously your most recent payment history will have the most impact on your credit score, positive or negative. 

Payment history is all about how you have managed your trade lines. Have you made all your payments perfectly, or have you been 30 days late, 60 days late, 90 days late, or has the trade line been sent to collection or closed for non-payment? These factors contribute to your score, but are also visible on your credit report for lenders to review when assessing your mortgage application. 

Amount Owed – 30%

How much you owe on a trade line compared to the limit of that trade line impacts your credit score greatly. For example, if you have a limit of $5,000 on your Visa, and you simply use that card to buy gas and groceries every month, and pay it off without ever carrying a balance, that is excellent management and this action will increase your credit score. However if you have a $10,000 Mastercard that you have maxed out and you are making minimum payments, your amount owed compared to the limit is really high, this sends up red flags and will negatively impact your credit score. Not to mention as a lender looks at your credit report, it is a strong indication that you might not be able to handle any more debt. 

Typically you want to use less than 75% of the credit available to you. Going over 75% will negatively impact your score. By staying under 25% of your available credit limit, you demonstrate strong credit management. And that is exactly what lenders want to see, strong credit management. 

Length of Credit History – 15%


How long you have had credit plays a role in determining your credit score. It also plays a role in how a lender looks at your credit. Unlike smaller loans, when applying for a mortgage, lenders want to see that you have had credit for a minimum of 2 years. Regardless of your credit score, if you haven’t had at least 2 trade lines reporting for 2 years, you are going to have a hard time getting a mortgage. 

The length of your credit history shows how responsible you have been long term with your credit. Time is needed to get the real picture of how responsible you are. Each trade line that is reporting on your credit report will show the date it was opened and a monthly history of your management. Although your history of management is only kept 6-7 years, the age of your trade line will always be visible.

It’s a great idea to always keep your oldest trade lines open and active. Even if you don’t need the credit available, keep the card open, and use it once every 3 months so that it stays live on your credit report. Your credit score will thank you! 

New Credit Inquiries – 10%

Frequently applying for new credit can be a sign that you are experiencing some financial difficulty, especially if the amount owed compared to the limit is over 75%. Applying for new credit can temporarily impact your credit score negatively, however if a new trade line is established, once it gets some positive payment history, your credit score will increase. 

As far as the mortgage process is concerned, instead of going to several lending institutions on your own, and having each one of them pull your credit, as a mortgage broker, I pull your credit report once and then use that same report with multiple lenders. This is a win for you. 

Pulling your credit report multiple times can impact your score negatively, but credit inquiries do only make up 10% of your score, so it’s not really anything to be worried about. Multiple credit inquiries won’t make good credit bad, but it can make bad credit worse. 

Types of Credit – 10%

This is the most insignificant factor in determining your credit, however the type of credit you have does impact your score. Trade lines like fixed installment loans show a scheduled repayment and are considered favourable. While deferred payment loans or payday cash loans from Money Mart can be a sign of money struggles.

Understanding Credit – Established Credit Profile


So when you take your credit score and you combine it with your credit report, as the lender sees it, this is called your credit profile. It’s not just about having a score above 720 (although that is really good), lenders will want to see that you have at least 2 active trade lines, reporting for a minimum of 2 years, with a minimum limit of $2,500. This is the bare minimum to make sure that your credit score has been established over enough time. 

So as you can see, the lender has a lot to think about when it comes to looking at your credit profile and deciding if they want to lend money to you for a mortgage. Next in the series, we will take a look at how your downpayment plays a part in the lender’s decision as well.

Does the Lash Lift procedure hurt? Not at all, in fact you will most likely be fighting the urge to take a quick nap. 

Is the procedure safe? Yes. Lashes are lifted onto our specially shaped lifting pads before products are applied. With anything around the eyes we want to ensure that no product actually enters the eyes. If you feel stinging of any sort let your technician know immediately.

Will the Lash Lift damage my natural lashes? No. However it is important to select a trained professional and follow all appropriate after care.

 How long does a lash lift take? A lash lift can take anything from 45 minutes to an hour from beginning to end. Maybe a little longer if you decide to have your eyelashes tinted which will enhance the effect of your lash lift.

Can I wear makeup after my lash lift? Yes but it is advised that you leave your lashes untouched for at least 48 hours after your treatment.

If you want to wear mascara it is advised not to use a waterproof mascara, as the removal of waterproof mascaras can be harsh on the lashes and weaken the lift.

 Can I use an eyelash curler? No. There will be no need for an eyelash curler as this treatment gives a much better result than using a curler, But more importantly, using one may weaken and damage your lashes.

You will be required to fill out a Health Questionnaire before having this service.

  • Positive reaction to patch test
  • Allergy to Latex

  • Keratitis
  • Cysts

  • Any eye infections such as conjunctivitis

  • Any disease / disorder causing shaking, twitching or erratic movement

  • Watery eyes
  • Any inflammation around the eye area
  • Hypersensitive skin / eyes
  • Bells Palsy or any condition that makes closing eyes difficult
  • Any skin trauma, cuts burns etc in the eye area
