GET READY FOR FALL LANDSCAPING

10 Things Pro Landscapers Do to Their Yards

Fall is the forgotten season when it comes to caring for your lawn and landscape. Many people just focus on cleaning up leaves and don’t realize that their yard still needs care in order to keep it in good health for the next spring. Here are some tips to keep your yard healthy.

1. THEY GIVE THEIR LAWN ONE LAST CUT.

Continue to mow your lawn until it stops growing — yes, even if it’s cold.

“If grass blades get too long, they shade the other blades around them,” says Scott Olivieri of Michael and Sons Nurseries in the New York City area. “Also, at snowfall, the too-long grass will get packed down and promote snow mold.”
The general rule of thumb? Keep grass around three inches tall — all year — so there is enough surface area for the sun to hit.

2. THEY TEST THEIR SOIL.

This is good time to apply grass seed, but there’s a crucial first step: “The soil should be tested to determine pH and nutrient availability,” says Matt Owens, president of the Landscape Contractors Association. “Necessary deficiencies need to be corrected or you’re just wasting time and money.” Sending a soil sample to a professional for testing will cost about $15 — and it’s well worth it. “Soil plays such an important role in the landscape, yet it often gets overlooked.”

3. THEN THEY RESEED THE LAWN.

Once the soil is tested — and any deficiencies are corrected — it’s time to aerate and seed the parts that are stressed from the summer’s sun or trampled from foot traffic. It depends on the condition of the lawn, but you typically need about three pounds for every 1,000 square feet of lawn, says Josh Kane, president of Kane Landscapes in Northern Virginia.

“I like to use certified seed, which means it’s almost purely grass seed with very little weed seeds and no fillers.”

4. THEY FLUFF UP THE MULCH.

Officially, it’s called turning the mulch. Fluffing it up gives flowerbeds a fresh look and cuts down on (or even eliminates) the need for more, fresh mulch. If you end up adding new stuff, keep the pile around two to three inches thick, Owens says. More than that, and the mulch becomes a hiding place for insects and plant diseases, and water could have a harder time being absorbed.

5. THEY MAKE THEIR OWN MULCH.

If you find that, after you turn the mulch, you still need more, try making your own. There’s no shortage of fallen leaves this time of year.

“Run your lawnmower over your leaves a few times and use them as mulch for your flower beds,” says Owens.

“This is an excellent source of organic matter that your plants will love you for.”

6. THEY DO SOME PLANNING AND PLANTING.

“Fall is a great time to plant,” says Kane. “See what plants need to be divided or re-spaced (especially perennials like Hosta plants and daisies) and what areas of the landscape need to be filled in to make next year look even better.” If you have summer annuals, swap them out for fall-appropriate mums and pansies.

7. THEY GIVE THEIR DRIVEWAY AND WALKWAYS SOME TLC.

Your lawn’s overall look includes your driveway and walkways.

“The fall is an important time to fill cracks in asphalt or concrete, and apply a sealant to help prevent water penetration damage from freezing and thawing,”

says Kane. Any time water gets into cracks and freezes, you are at risk for even more damage.

8. THEY WATER THEIR EVERGREENS.

“Make sure all evergreens are sufficiently watered in September and October to reduce the possibility of dehydration in the winter,”

says Kevin McHale of McHale Landscape Design in Maryland. How much water do you need? That depends on the recent weather. “If it’s starting to be a rainy fall, no water is necessary. If it’s less than four inches for the month, you’ll need one or two thorough hour-long waterings once a week for up to three weeks.”

9. THEY DO SOME PRUNING.

Trees and shrubs typically need a heavy pruning before the cold winter. “Some may need it to help prevent damage from snow and ice storms and some just for looks or to control size for next spring,” says Kane. Just don’t prune certain flowering plants like hydrangeas, lilacs and viburnum, because it could spoil the spring bloom.

10. THEY PACK UP FOR THE WINTER.

When your chores are done, bring in all of your tools, sprinklers and, especially, hoses. “Water in the hose will expand when it freezes and damage the hose,” says Olivieri.

“And don’t forget to have all irrigation lines blown out so lines, heads and valves don’t crack.”

Building a Custom Designed Home – Step 1: The Perfect Plan

So, you’ve decided to build a custom home, woo-hoo!! Building a custom home is such a wonderful experience. It allows you to see your own imagination come to life in a home that is uniquely crafted for you and your family.

Now, where should you start?

You’ve probably already got some ideas in mind of what you’re wanting in terms of the floor plan or layout for your new home. Whether it’s three bedrooms on the main floor, or a mudroom off the garage to hide the family’s jackets and boots from guests, or maybe your kids are all grown up so having an office on the main floor is more important than an extra bedroom. Whatever it is, that idea in your head about what you want in your new home – that’s your wish list. So, before you get too far into the process, sit down with your family and write down everything that is on your wish list for your home.

Questions to ask yourself?

  • Where do you want to live? (Small town, big city, close to parks and green space, close to schools, close to work, close to family, etc.)
  • Have you picked a lot yet? Finding the right lot is crucial when thinking about your floor plan because the home will have to be drawn up to suit the lot.
  • How many square feet do you want in your home?
  • Bungalow or a two-storey?
  • Do you want to have more bedrooms in your home, or would it be of more value to you to have that space for something else?
  • Would you like to have walk in closets in all of the bedrooms? Maybe just in the master?
  • Are you wanting a 2 car garage, or 3, or more?
  • Do you prefer an open concept layout or more closed off?
  • Which direction do you want your windows to face in the living room? Do you want lots of sun, or not?
  • Is a walk through pantry from the garage to the kitchen to allow you to put groceries away easily something you’d like?
  • If a young family that goes through A LOT of laundry, maybe it would make sense to have your laundry room close to the bedrooms?
  • Is a wet bar in the basement something you’d like to make entertaining a breeze?
  • What else do you have in mind for your home that’s important to you?

The perfect plan:

Once you have an idea of what type of home you’re wanting, we can show you a bunch of different plan options. We’ve got plenty of plans for you to look through at the office to give you a better idea of the kind of floor plan layouts and exterior looks that you like.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with designing your plan and need some inspiration,Emerald Park Homes Pinterest and Houzz boards are a great place find ideas.  The Houzz board has photos of most of recently completed homes that you can browse through.

Before they get too far into the design process of your plan, it’s always a good idea to arrange a meeting with your builder. Together they can sit down and make sure that the kind of house you have in mind is going to fit into your budget. They will also be able to help you pick out the right lot for you and your family. It’s important to pick your lot early on as the house plan will have to be tailored specifically to the lot.

Designing your plan:

After you’ve determined your budget and chosen your lot, their team of designers will work together with you and their dedicated designer to take the ideas of what you like from all the different plans you’ve looked at and put them together into one perfect plan. If you find a plan that they have already had drawn and built before – like a show home perhaps – and you love it, you can always change it around and tweak it a bit to customize it to fit what you are looking for as an option as well.

After consulting with the designer to talk about your plan, they will create a preliminary plan for your home.

From there, they will take you through a virtual walk-through of your home so you can get a feel of what is really going to look and feel like once it is built.

You can make any kind of changes that you’d like to it. Once you’ve given it the thumbs up then it is ready to for us to analyse and start working on pricing it out for you.

Keep in mind:

** Preliminary plans are one of the first steps to getting you a quote for your new home. But, it’s worth mentioning that there are other decisions that need to be made in order for us to do so accurately. Like what kind of finishings you will be wanting in your home, etc. But we’ll get into that elsewhere.

Rapid Lawn Landscape Solutions explains the many benefits of mulch

There are many advantages of adding mulch to a garden area, besides making the garden more attractive and finished looking.

These include:

  • One of the best benefits of mulch is its ability to retain moisture in the soil.
  • Organic mulches break down over time and contribute to soil health. This can be very helpful, especially if your soil fertility is poor.
  • Mulch reduces winter injury and helps with weed control.
  • Other garden mulch benefits include protection from erosion and protection from mechanical injury from weed eaters and lawnmowers.
  • Some mulch types, such as cypress, cedar or pinewood chips, do an excellent job of repelling ticks, gnats and fleas.

Organic Versus Inorganic Mulch

Organic mulches are derived from natural materials that decompose over time. As organic mulches decompose, they add nutrients and organic matter to the soil and beneficial microorganisms like nitrifying bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi are enhanced while undesirable pathogens — those that cause plant diseases are inhibited. Increased amounts of organic matter will improve soil tilth and drainage, increase soil moisture retention, reduce soil compaction, and attract earthworms.

Because organic mulches decompose, they need to be replaced.  Depending on the type of mulch used, replacement intervals vary from one to four years.

Inorganic mulches include stones, geotextile mats and landscape fabrics, and plastic mulches. Landscape fabrics and plastic mulches deteriorate with time and eventually require replacement.  Inorganic mulches usually are more tedious to install and may require irrigation because water penetration may be limited.  Some inorganic mulches are designed to reflect the sky to confuse and keep insects from landing on plants.  Many do not have a natural appearance and are often covered by an organic mulch for decorative purposes.

General Tips for Applying Mulches

Do not place mulch directly against plant crowns or tree bases. Mulch placed directly in contact with stems or tree trunks may retain excess moisture around the base of the plant that can favour the development of diseases like crown rot. Mulch piled around plants may also serve as lodging for bark and stem eating rodents.

Mulch applied too thickly can cause problems.  A wood-derived mulch may undergo high-temperature decomposition causing it to dry out.  The mulch may then be colonized by fungi that create water repellent conditions throughout the mulch.  Water is unable to penetrate the mulch and reach the soil and plants fail to receive adequate moisture. Mulching too deeply can also cause the soil to remain continuously wet contributing to root and stem rot problems in addition to depriving plants of needed oxygen.

Apply a mulch layer no more than 1 to 3 inches thick. Thoroughly water newly installed wood or bark mulches.

Many good quality mulches are stored in large piles that reach high temperatures.  When the mulch is spread or bagged, the high-temperature tolerant microorganisms that inhabit the mulch die as the mulch cools.

If the mulch is allowed to dry out or remain dry, nuisance fungi can colonize the mulch and create a water-repellent surface.

Add a source of nitrogen to garden soils before applying wood–derived mulches.  Soil microorganisms that decompose organic materials such as wood-based mulches are effective competitors for limited soil nitrogen. This may cause temporary nitrogen deficiencies, especially in annual and perennial plants. Yellowing of leaves often indicates a nitrogen deficiency. Lightly incorporate a source of nitrogen such as blood meal, urea or a high nitrogen lawn fertilizer before applying mulch.
