Trusted Regina Insurance Broker tip on 9 Things You Didn't Know About House Insurance

9 Things You Didn't Know About House Insurance:

1. If a summer storm thunders through and the fists of Thor strike down your roof, are you covered?

Yes, yes you are. This season for Regina has been particularly busy for Mother Nature. Catastrophic amounts of rain, extremely high winds and lightning shows that put Gene Simmons to shame. You'll be happy to know lightning strikes are covered with your home insurance policy.

2. What if lightning knock down the power lines in my neighbourhood and we don't have power for hours on end and everything in my Freezer and Fridge rots, are we covered for that?

Unfortunately most basic home policies do not cover this, however most comprehensive policies do. Your comprehensive policy will cover damage or loss to your belongings (ex: food) caused by a failure of any system in your dwelling or outbuildings that maintains an artificial temperature (furnace, freezer, or fridge) as long as the damage is a result of that change of temperature and due to a peril insured on your policy. If you are insured for lightning and lightning strikes your house and fries your freezer and you lose all of your ice cream – fear not! Your ice cream is covered. However if a family member accidently unplugs your freezer and that causes your loss you will have to get them to replace your frozen treats.

3. What if an airplane crashes into your house, are you covered?

Yes! Fact, if an airplane were to crash into your house, you're covered. If you're in the house when this happens you have many more things to worry about than your insurance coverage but yes, you are covered in the rare chance of a plane crash.

4. What if a satellite or meteor crashes into your house, are you covered for that damage?

Yes you are! It's very common for satellites to fall out of orbit and back down to earth. If major damage is caused make sure you file a claim with your insurance broker.

5. If an airplane or car or a fire or Thor damages an aircraft I stored on my property, is it covered?

No! Many people think because once you have house insurance everything under your roof is covered. This is not the case. Any vehicles, airplanes, motorcycles etc. must have extra insurance purchased in order to have them covered. Your regular home insurance policy doesn't cut it.

6. Are you covered for flood or sink hole damages to your house?

No! Your regular house insurance policy doesn't cover damage due to flooding or that of a sink hole. The former obviously much more likely than the latter.

You are not covered for any loss or damage cause by flood, surface water, or overflow from streams or other bodies of water. However you are covered for loss or damage if it is due to a sudden and unexpected escape of water from a swimming pool or its attached equipment, fire fighting activities, or a public watermain.

7. Would you be covered for damage from an Earthquake or volcano?

Luckily Saskatchewan is situated no where remotely near a fault line or volcano, so this one we don't really need to worry about. Generally speaking, damage from an earthquake is not covered under your regular home insurance policy. You are not covered for loss or damage caused by snowslide, earthquake, landslide, or any earth movement. However, damage from the volcanic ash of a volcano often is.

8. Are you covered if your home gets damaged in a riot?

Again, living in Regina, the odds of your home getting damaged in a riot aren't that high, I mean, as long as the Rider's have a winning record. Generally you're covered for damage from a riot.

9. Are you covered if an explosion damages your house?

Yes, you are covered for most damage to your house.....unless Dad was trying to be a hero this past Canada Day and exploded a part of your house, your insurance broker may have a few questions for you.

Here they share a tip on Fire Safety at the Cottage:

In Ontario, enjoying time with family and friends at the cottage is synonymous with summer. But don't forget that fire doesn't take vacations. You are responsible for keeping your family and friends fire safe so minimize the risk of fire and burn injury by including these important fire safety tips in your vacation plans:

Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Make sure cooking utensils, paper towels and anything else that can burn are kept a safe distance from the stove. Always keep a proper fitting lid near the stove when cooking. If a pot catches fire, slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove. Cooking and drinking do not mix. Excessive alcohol use is a contributing factor in many cooking-related fires. Drink responsibly and keep an eye on those who do not.

For all Ontario homes, cottages, cabins and seasonal homes to have working . Test smoke alarms monthly and each time you return to the cottage. Pack new smoke alarms and batteries in case they need to be replaced. Early warning is critical to safely escaping a fire.  It’s the law smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas

Make sure everyone in your cottage knows what to do if the smoke alarms sound, if possible, and determine who will be responsible for helping young children, older adults or anyone else who may need assistance to escape a fire.  Plan two ways out of every room

Your Insurance Questions Answered By Dusyk & Barlow Insurance Brokers

1. Child Moving Out- What Insurance do they need?

When a child moves out they should get insurance for their home and belongings through Home, Tenant and Condo policies. Your insurance will provide you coverage for such things as fire, and theft. Liability is also included in these options, which will cover you in case you are sued due to negligence or cause bodily injury or property damage.

2. What is Broad Coverage?

Broad Coverage for the most part is the Cadillac coverage on the building and Pinto coverage on your contents. However, most insurance companies do offer coverage which is the opposite, so you can have the Cadillac coverage on your contents and Pinto on your dwelling. If you have broad coverage, you can insure specific belongings by scheduling them on your policy. This option is available for certain types of belongings like jewellery for example. This does require an additional premium, however, the coverage is comprehensive, and you can have a lower deductible.

3. Teenager getting in accidents with parents vehicle?

SGI brought out the Safe Driver Recognition Program many years back, it is intended to penalize the driver, not the registered owner in your case. However, if you have an auto policy, these accidents will affect the policy, as it is paying out for the damages. I always recommend that parents register the vehicle in their child’s name if they are the primary operator of that vehicle. By doing this it will not cost the parent extra on their own auto policies, as well for liability purposes.

4. What exactly is No-Fault Insurance?

The public has a common misconception of what No-Fault means. No-Fault means that as long as you have valid plate insurance, it does not matter who is at fault, regardless of whether it is a multi-vehicle accident or just one vehicle, the injured parties will be provided with some medical coverage. This coverage depends on whether you have chosen to be covered by No-Fault or Tort.

5. I am going away on vacation what should I do regarding my home Insurance?

It depends on what time of year you go away. In the warm season, there is no requirement. However, we always recommend that you turn off your water. In the winter it is different. During this time of year, insurance companies require the following steps to be taken: you must turn off your water, have someone come in daily to check on your house or have an alarm system that monitors for low temperatures.

6. When travelling is my stuff insured?

When you are travelling, your home, tenant or condo insurance will temporarily cover you anywhere in the world. This includes liability coverage. However, you will be subject to your policy coverage, policy limits and your deductible.

7. Scheduled Insurance for expensive items of Jewellery- worth it?

If you have valuables it is essential that you discuss them with your insurance broker. Every insurance company has different limits and depending on the type of policy you have chosen, you could be underinsured or not insured for certain types of losses. It is a good idea to have your jewellery appraised. By doing this we can schedule your valuable jewellery on your policy for an additional premium. Scheduling your valuables will provide them with comprehensive coverage and a lower deductible, which can range from $0 and up.
