Time for Risk?

As we near the middle of the 2013 RRSP season, I have one piece of advice: take a look at downsizing your risk.

  • Risk is for a time and place

  • Markets move in cycles

  • Get some help with figuring out where we are in this cycle

The interesting part of this cycle to me is that market is high again. The Dow Jones and S&P 500 are at levels not seen since before the crash of 2008. So here’s the question:

If we know the market high of 2000 was a bubble, and we know the market high of 2008 was a bubble, and we find ourselves in the same place today, what do we think this is?

It’s kind of the old, ‘If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…’ question. The next question though is if it’s a cycle and we do exit, when do we get back in?

I think a good exit strategy also comes with a good re-entry strategy. “When ‘x’ happens, we’ll do this.” It automates your ideas in advance, when you are rational and able to make a decision rather than when things are difficult and a person’s biases may come to bear on the process.

I heard it said well once, “Amateurs think about tactics, professionals think about logistics.” Make sure you’ve got a pro on your side!

No school like the old school.

You know the old adage ‘Buy, hold, prosper?’

I prefer an even older one, ‘buy low, sell high.

- Buy and hold only works in certain market conditions -

Sell discipline is the hardest thing to have - Knowing what to do and when to do it pays!

One of the problems with investing today is that interest rates are low. Another one is that the market seems to give some good gains for a while and then lose everything you got over the past few years. We call this kind of a market a sideways trading market and there’s only one way to make money in it: Buy Low, Sell High. This means doing the opposite of what everyone is saying.

When the complacency is high and people are chasing a little more gain, you need to sell. When people are scared and times are tough, you need to buy. This is where professional guidance can pay off the most. Having someone by your side, helping you make these tough decisions with a system of dependable signals can be invaluable and help you feel as though you are not adrift in the sea of the financial markets. And that’s why I call this old school investing. Nothing gives you gains like buying low and selling high.

Chris Worby a Trusted REGINA FINANCIAL EXPERT provides a Trusted Tip on Life Insurance

Finding the shortest and safest route to any of your dreams requires planning and only with a carefully thought out financial plan can you be sure to make the most of your resources and to protect against risks along the way. Here Chris Shares a tip:

Do you have too much life insurance?

People used to say you should have 10 times your earnings available as life insurance. I think they are wrong. Here are three things you should consider.

  • Your net worth
  • How the insurance money may be used
  • Every estate should have some insurance

Life Insurance is a safety net for your family when you haven’t had the time to build your own. Consider this, if you are young with dependents and have a fair bit of debt, you will need more money than if you are retired, living debt-free and enjoying your grandchildren.

How the money may be used is important as well. Some insurance policies have tax advantages and estate planning provisions to bypass wills and streamline an estate. Sometimes survivorship is the main concern, for example, a young family with debt and children may need a different plan than someone who is retired. A clear understanding of your options will help you choose an insurance package that best meets your needs.

Time and again, every estate I’ve worked with that has insurance has been much easier to manage. Loved ones left behind have been in better financial shape than those without an insurance plan – regardless of age. Experience has shown me the value of an insurance plan.

I think everyone should carry some insurance. It’s important to note, any recommendation on dollar amounts need to be personalized to meet your needs. If you are looking at life insurance, you should consult a professional to make a better, more informed decision.

Chris Worby your Trusted REGINA FINANCIAL EXPERT provides a Trusted Tip on RRSP's vs TFSA's

RRSP vs TFSA

I get asked this question all the time – “What’s the difference between a TFSA and an RRSP?

Difference:

  • Taxation on the way into and out of these accounts
  • Tax Deferred growth in both accounts
  • These are accounts, not investments Both these accounts are very similar except for how they are taxed.

On an RRSP, you get a ‘tax break,’ meaning, if you put money into an RRSP, it will be deducted from your income and you will receive the taxes you have already paid back after you do your tax return. Example. You earn $50,000 and contribute $5000 to your RRSP. Your income comes down to $45,000 but you have paid tax on $50,000. The tax paid on that $5,000 gets refunded to you. The RRSP is therefore an ‘un-taxed’ pool of money. If you take money out, you will then need to pay tax. TFSAs are different in that you do not get a tax break on the way in – in our example, your $5000 does not reduce your income. Which means your account is a ‘taxed’ pool of money and is not taxable when you withdraw it. They both benefit from tax deferred growth – meaning you don’t pay taxes on the interest, dividends or capital gains from the investment in these accounts. But how they are taxed on the way in and on the way out is the difference. And you’ll notice I never said anything about these being investments – that is because neither an RRSP nor a TFSA is an investment – they are accounts.

If you choose to put GICs, Mutual Funds, Stocks or Bonds in these accounts is up to you. But they are just that – accounts.

Which one should you do? I can only make a recommendation if I know your specific circumstances but one thing is certain – you should do one of them!
