Clogged Drains

What are the signs of clogged drains?

  • Water backs up out of a sink drain.
  • Water pools around a shower drain, then drains out slowly.
  • Toilet bowl water bubbles when you run the sink.
  • Slow draining of water from your bathtub, sink or other fixture can indicate a clog, even if there's been no backup yet.
  • Gurgling sounds from drains, especially after running a washing machine or dishwasher.
  • A mysterious puddle of water on the floor near tub or sink.
  • Rotting food smell from the kitchen sink drain or disposal.

Before calling in an expert, you can try these clogged drain tips:

  • Fill your sink part way with water.
  • In a double kitchen sink, plug one drain with a wet rag while plunging the other side.
  • For washroom sinks, plug the overflow hole with the rag.
  • Work the plunger up and down many times, then quickly pull it off the drain. Repeat this a few times.
  • For your toilet, use a flange plunger rather than a cup plunger.
  • Don’t resort to chemical drain cleaners as they can corrode your pipes.

This diagram shows many of the common types of vents and drains in most homes. The green pipes represent outgoing wastewater, the yellow pipes represent ventilation tubes, the red pipes indicate hot water, and the blue lines show cold water.

Clogged Showers and Bathtubs

What are the signs of a clogged shower or tub?

  • Water rising slowly toward your ankles as you shower or overflowing as you bathe.
  • Flood conditions in your washroom.
  • A slow-to-drain tub or shower.
  • Strange gurgling or “strangled” noises coming from the tub or shower drain.
  • An unpleasant odour coming from the drains.
  • A pool of water around the drain when it hasn’t been used in hours.

What you can do to fix a clogged shower drain or tub before you call Mr. Rooter Plumbing:

  • You might have a simple, easy-to-reach hair and soap scum clog in the bath or shower. You can check by removing the drain screen, if you have one.
  • For pop-up drains, raise the lever to open, then grab the stopper and pull (or unscrew) from the drain hole.
  • Use a bent wire to grab and pull out the clog.
  • Clean the stopper of hair and soap--and replace.
  • No luck? Try plunging, with about 25-50 mm of water in the bottom of the tub or shower.
  • Cover the holes of the overflow plate using a wet rag or duct tape.
  • Plunge the drain. You can try a series of 3 or 4 plunging attempts if the first doesn't produce results.

Clogged Toilets

What are the signs of a clogged toilet?

  • Toilet clogs and overflows
  • A constantly running toilet that may spontaneously refill
  • Poor flushing or no flush at all
  • Leaks around your toilet
  • A hissing sound or water trickling inside the toilet tank

What might be going on with your toilet:

  • Clogs and overflows: Clogs are a common toilet repair issue, which, after a flush, result in the dreaded overflow. Clogs can often be addressed with a plunger.
  • Toilet runs constantly or spontaneously refills Toilets that run constantly or spontaneously flush can add up to a lot of money in wasted water, and typically indicate a worn or damaged flapper. Flappers are relatively simple to replace and a leak can be verified with a simple dye test.
  • Poor flushing or no flush at all: poor flush is usually the result of the holes under the rim of the bowl or the siphon jet becoming clogged. You may be able to loosen the debris with a wire coat hanger, using a small mirror to see under the rim. Be careful not to scratch the toilet bowl.
  • Leaks: Leaks around the toilet may result from a leaky supply line, a cracked bowl or tank in need of replacement, or leaks from one of the five seals on your toilet. Identify the seals and see if their bolts and nuts can be tightened or if the seals will require replacement. You will find seals:
    • Between the tank and the bowl.
    • At the mounting bolts at the base of the ballcock assembly (the water supply valve inside your toilet tank.)
    • On the plastic flange underneath the base of the toilet. Please note: If you discover a broken flange is the source of your leak, toilet repair performed by a professional plumber is recommended.
  • Hissing or water trickling in the tank: Water trickling into the tank from the supply line may be a result of a stuck float, the refill tube being inserted too far into the overflow tube or the need to replace the entire ballcock assembly (fill valve).

When to call Mr. Rooter Plumbing for toilet repair:

  • Severe leaks and overflows with structure damaging potential.
  • Raw sewage backups and overflows that could present a health hazard.
  • Complete loss of water supply to your toilet that cannot be restored.
  • You can't find the source of a leak or find a solution to your toilet issues.

Prevent a Clogged Drain from Ever Ruining your Day Again

Preventive maintenance is the key to keeping your home’s plumbing system healthy. We offer an economical maintenance plan to clean and maintain your pipes, drains and your entire plumbing system. Neglected pipes are often lined with years of buildup (including hair, sand, rust, grease and minerals from hard water) and they may begin to corrode. Mr. Rooter Plumbing maintenance is a great way to save money and help prevent future repairs, burst pipe emergencies or inconvenience.

Be Prepared in Case of an Emergency

Locate the shutoff valves throughout your home and familiarize yourself with the components of your plumbing they control, including the main water shutoff valve for your home. Familiarizing yourself with these valves can be the difference between mopping up a small leak or major water damage effecting the structure and contents of your home. If you are having problems addressing toilet repair issues in your home, contact Mr. Rooter Plumbing. Our licensed, professional plumbers can quickly and correctly address your home’s toilet repair needs.

Trusted Regina Window Coverings tip on 2014 Trends in Window Coverings

Current Trends in Window Coverings
So Regina, what are the current fashions in window coverings? The key words are no fuss and minimalism with an emphasis on crisp, strait lines. Gone are the days of heavy draped effects using jabots and swags; tab curtains or gathered valances. The new styles are not your grandma’s!

DOUBLE IT UP
While layering is popular, the overall look remains simple and the tone is usually consistent for both treatments. Blending colors rather than contrasting ones work best when you want to layer window treatments. Any type of blind can be used under drapes for a layered look. It works best if there is window depth that allows the inside blind to be set back creating a cleaner look and allowing the top treatments to sit nicely overtop.

Above is an interesting look with drapes and one roller shade with the outer printed ones stationary. I love this look of a partial rod as it creates a unique artistic look around your window, using the window as a canvas. With today’s new homes and the windows becoming bigger and more of a focal point of the home, it is a great idea to treat them as artwork and express your style.

PATTERNS ARE SO IN!
When you look through new fabrics you are bound to notice that textures and patterns are plentiful. You can't go wrong with geometric patterns, trellis designs, large scale florals, bold colors, whimsical motifs etc.

BANDING
Vertical or horizontal banding creates that interesting soft look while keeping the minimalist style. You can add banding to good advantage if you want to add visual height or width to a space. Spacing of the drapery is important for this effect as well and a good design expert can help with this. Overall, drapes are getting longer and wider to accommodate the trend to make windows appear larger in scale which is a trending look right now.

TONE ON TONE
The window treatments in the room below are simple, harmonious with the walls, and allow the view and the room to shine. When deciding the colour of your drapes you should first consider the atmosphere you want in your space. If you want restful, choose solid colour with texture and keep to the colors in the room.

CLEANER LOOK ON TOP OF PANELS
The inverted box pleat (back pleat) is a soft but tailored look for modern decor. It has been replacing pinch pleat and grommet styles when a contemporary feel is required while still creating that soft look to your interior home décor.

Grommet panels have been around for quite a few years and are definitely still in style. While some grommet drapes can look very informal, it is possible to have a more styled look too. For grommet drapery to look "full" you need at least 7 or 8 folds at the top.

Updated Sheers
Yes, sheers are still popular but they are a world away from the fussy, frilly and lacy ones that the word sheer brings to mind. Sheer Vertical Blinds Sheer vertical blinds combine the flowing appearance of drapery and the practicality of easy light control. When rotated open, vinyl louvers draped in sheer fabric let in softly diffused light.

Thank you for reading! And don’t forget the matching accessories!

Gold's Gym Trusted Regina Gym tip on Tight Hips? Try This For A Better Squat

Tight Hips? Try This For A Better Squat:

After hunching over your computer all day at work, your body isn’t exactly primed for peak movement. One telltale sign of spending too much time sitting is the resultant tightness in your hips. And, this symptom goes beyond a dull nag; it can diminish the effectiveness of any butt-firming efforts you put in after you get out of that chair.

The squat is one of the best exercises for sculpting a strong, tight backside. It strengthens the muscles of your lower body, including your hips, glutes, hamstrings, and quadriceps, engages the muscles of your core, and helps improve your balance and coordination — but that's only if you're loose enough to complete the move correctly.

In order to get the most out of the exercise, you want to get low. The deeper into the squat you go, the more muscles you'll engage, and the more effective it becomes, explains fitness trainer and nutrition coach Adam Rosante. Here's where your high-strung hips cause problems; tightness in that area interferes with your flexibility and range of motion, which can cause sloppy form.

The solution is as simple as tweaking your foot positioning: Place your heels shoulder-width apart and turn your toes out slightly, as if pointing towards the 11 and one on a clock. Rosante explains that the wider stance opens hips a bit more, allowing for a deeper range of motion as you lower into the squat. And, turning toes out slightly helps keep your knees from buckling inward. Aim to get your hips below knee-level while maintaining the natural curve of your spine and keeping your chest lifted.

"When you improve your mobility and range of motion, you get a more effective workout, both functionally and aesthetically, and you also help defend your body against minor injuries that can stack up to some bigger problems later in life," Rosante says.

If this simple form tweak is all it takes to see better results and ward off future aches, why wouldn't you give it a try? (Next time you get a break from your desk chair, that is.)
