Daniel B: Scott - How do you know how often granite has to be re-sealed? Do you offer this service, and how much should someone expect to pay?
We will seal granite when we do the install and will warranty that for the next 15 years. Sealing is a 15 minute process that any home owner could do if they wanted. Not sure I would pay to have it done!!
Ann Lyte-Maille: Scott, Is there some standard height for counters in the kitchen? I bought a dishwasher that was supposed to go under the couner but it doesn't fit? is there an affordable way to fix that without having to get all new counters?
There is no standard code height as far as I am aware. A typical kitchen is around 36” high and after speaking with a couple of cabinet people, they do get adjusted based on a range or dishwasher. I’m not sure what happened in your case but if you have a floor under the dishwasher, could it be modified or removed so that it would fit?
Jamie Dawn Plummer: What is the best counter top to have for those of us who "forget" to use a cutting board at the best of times?
My wife gets upset at me because I rarely use a cutting board on our granite. I have no fear of hurting my granite, but cutting on it will dull and ruin the knives quickly if they can’t be sharpened.
M Liz Beisel: I have new granite countertops - should the backsplash area be caulked or not? I have heard yes and no to my question! Thanks!
We typically only silicone granite to granite, but yes the backsplash should be caulked to seal everything off. Because there are so many options with respect to color, we leave this for the home owner to do unless asked.
Victoria Wong Scott( The winning question!) :Our house was built in 2011 and we would like to upgrade the kitchen countertops to granite. Is there a way to do this without ripping out the backsplash?
You should be able to get the countertops out without damaging the backsplash. If there is a grout line between the tile and the countertop, you will have to have that fixed after the new countertops go in. The biggest problem you may have is the your countertops are likely 1 ½” thick right now and granite/quartz is 3cm thick, which is just shy of 1 ¼”. There may be a gap between the countertop and tile, but there are some easy fixes for that.
Dawn Marie Barker :if changing laminate counter to granite, will my cupboards beneath it need to be reinforced to accommodate the weight? Thanks!
As long as you have a minimum of ½” verticle gable support, you should be okay. Having said that, we will visit your house free of charge for a quote (and most companies should) and we could look at everything at that time. Having said that, in over 2800 installs, we’ve only had to reinforce cabinets twice, so it’s likely that it will be okay.
Bruce Voldeng: Scott- I need a new countertop in my bathroom. What is the best type (granite, marble etc) and what type of sink (the ones that sit on top, regular or sunken)do you recommend for it?
We encourage our customers to find the color and pattern that they are looking for and if it’s granite, it’s granite and if it’s quartz, it’s quartz. Both products are extremely durable and will last you a lifetime. So pick the one you love the most, and go with that!!
Steve Gurski: Scott I need to redo counter tops how do I get the top off to put the new stuff on? in major need of work to be done so even if I dont win this Scott I may get in touch.
Steve, no worries, as part of our quotes, removal of up to an hour is included in the price. Newer countertops are screwed in from the bottom, and older ones are always interesting!
Jill Krause Scott: I have heard about the granite transformation that is an overlay over your existing countertop. Can you give your opinion on this and how affordable is it?
Let my caveat this by saying I don’t know their product. However, I believe it’s important to sell your product and not bash or spread untruths about others. Granite or quartz countertops will be installed in one day. While I don’t think you want to hang around and watch, your kitchen/bathrooms will be perfect when do. Everything will be cleaned. Quartz does not need to be sealed and we will seal granite when we install it. We will provide a 15 year warranty against staining after that. The truth is, 65% of granite is so dense (hard) that sealing is pointless as nothing actually absorbs into the stone. The cost difference between the two products is minimal so I think putting the “real” product in your house is a better option. Granite is often imitated but it can not be duplicated…….
